Travelers are often desensitized to the animals that perish on our roadways, even though they cause more deaths than poachers, deforestation or pollution. Motorists fly by lifeless animals without batting an eye. Are their lives less worthy because they’re seen as diseased scavengers or dirty? The purpose of this continuing series is to call into question an individual’s definition of life and worthiness through the model of roadkill. Animals often seen as unwelcomed are given a reinvented composition to be remembered. I find these critters in their final resting place and take them to a more peaceful location where I can take time setting up a tableau. When I finish photographing the scene, I clear a spot in nature to lay the animal and perform a memorial service. My tribute to animals in Roadkill in Memorial evokes feelings of empathy and compassion from the viewer.
